Occupational Health Assessments
AC Medical are qualified experts in Occupational Health, providing comprehensive assessments and reports for individuals and employers. We leverage our clinical expertise to recommend adjustments and guidance that safeguard the health and safety of employees and their colleagues. Our services encompass all aspects of occupational health reporting — including support for ill‑health retirement.
Occupational health assessments play a crucial role in safeguarding the physical and mental well-being of employees, preventing work-related illnesses or injuries, and facilitating early intervention and support when needed. These assessments are often conducted by employees as part of their legal obligation to ensure a healthy and safe working environment for their employees.

Occupational Health Assessment
A comprehensive evaluation of the employee is conducted by one of our qualified occupational health physicians either at our Nottingham clinic, or virtually. A referral is received in advance of the appointment which forms the basis of the assessment, with any relevant medical history and work environment factors taken into consideration. Recommendations and adjustments will be made in the form of a report based upon assessment findings.
Ill Health Retirement Assessment
An in-depth assessment will carried out by a trained expert who will establish whether the individual is suitable and meets the criteria for ill health retirement, which falls into 2 categories.
Tier 1: Total Incapacity – When the employee is considered permanently unable to work in any occupation due to ill health.
Tier 2: Partial Incapacity – When the employee is unable to perform their current role but may still be capable of working in a different capacity or role.
It is important for individuals considering ill health retirement to seek guidance from their pension scheme administrators or financial advisors to fully understand the process, eligibility criteria, and the impact on their financial situation. Additionally, employers should provide support and guidance to employees navigating ill health retirement, ensuring a smooth transition from the workplace to retirement while addressing any health-related concerns with sensitivity and care.
What to expect if you are having an Occupational Health, or Ill Health Retirement Assessment?
Step 1: An employee is identified as requiring an independent occupational health, or ill health retirement report compiling.
Step 2: The employee’s manager completes an occupational health or ill health retirement referral form detailing why the report is being made, details around any absences that may have occurred, and job role specifics, such as workplace hazards and risks, as well as giving details surrounding the job role. The manager will also submit a list of dates and times the employee is available for their appointment.
Step 3: Once the above documents have been submitted, an appointment will be scheduled and agreed with the referring manager.
Step 4: AC Medical Group will email the employee with a video meeting link, for virtual appointments, or a calendar invitation and text to their face-to-face appointment.
Step 5: The meeting will last roughly 1 hour, but may be more or less time, dependent on the referral, which may also include the completion of additional health questionnaires or a mental health screening questionnaire.
Step 6: During the appointment the doctor will ask several questions exploring the employee’s current situation, which the employee has asked for information around.
Step 7: Following the appointment, the doctor will compile an occupational health, or ill health retirement report, detailing their findings from the appointment. This will then be sent to the employee where they have up to 2 days to approve or ask for any amendments to be done to the report. If correspondence is not received from the employee to an AC Medical advisor, the report will be released to the employer as it will be presumed that the report is okay in it its current format.
Step 8: After the report has been released by AC Medical Group to the employer, correspondence between the employee and the Doctor will end. If the employee has any further questions, they are to refer them to their line manager, who will contact the Doctor who undertook the appointment if relevant.
