Dr Adam J M Connor studied at the University of Nottingham 1991 – 1996 gaining an intercalated degree (Bachelor of Medical Sciences) with research in the Pathology of Breast Cancer. In 1996 Dr Connor completed his training with a Bachelor in Medicine and Bachelor in Surgery.

Originally interested in pursuing a career in surgery and in particular working in Ears, Nose & Throat surgery Dr Connor did a number of rotational jobs in the East Midlands, where he gained substantial surgical experience that would later inform one of his special interests ENT and also facilitate additional skills in minor surgery in General Practice.

Joining the Trent Vocational Training Scheme in 1999, Dr Connor completed the additional training to be a General Practitioner but with extra modules in Palliative care and Psychiatry. The latter particularly informed his career development and special interests. During placements in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics Dr Connor gained 2 further post-graduate diplomas of DRCOG (diploma of Obstetrics & Gynaecology) and DCH (diploma of child health). On completing the VTS and MRCGP examination (awarded distinction and eligible for the Frazer Rose prize) in 2002 Dr Connor worked in General practice in the Long Eaton area in multiple practices before becoming a partner at the University of Nottingham Health Service.
On joining the University Health Service there were 25,000 patients. This had grown to over 42,000 in Nottingham and an additional 10,000 at a second University site in Lincoln, where Dr Connor was the principal clinical lead.

In 2002 there were only 2 GP’s approved under section 12 of the Mental Health Act to be part of a mental health assessment (for patients other than their own). Inspired by an interest in mental health Dr Connor undertook the training to be “section 12 approved” and has continued to be an integral part in this complex and critical work, working with service users with substantial mental health difficulties and often when at their most vulnerable. Further interest in mental health developed with patient contact and in particular, due to the young population served, an interest in self harm and suicide prevention. Dr Connor has delivered talks on these topics at national conferences across the UK.

In 2012 whilst the medical director of the UK largest private ambulance service, Dr Connor undertook a qualification in Occupational Medicine and gained the Diploma of Occupational Medicine. Dr Connor was the clinical lead for the UNHS with regard to Occupational Medicine.

Other roles and responsibilities have included original member of the national steering group for Choose & Book at its inception, Cauldicott Guardian for UNHS, Information Governance lead for UNHS, Mental Health lead for UNHS, previously IT lead and university liaison principal, previously a member of the Vale of Trent Faculty Board for the RCGP, current Knowledge Broker for CLARHC (Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care) in a study of suicide risk assessment in general practice.
