Motor Racing Medicals
A motor racing medical is a specialised medical examination that is required for individuals involved in the sport of motor racing.
The motor sport association requires all applicants for a licence to complete a medical, before application, or when renewing.
The medical examination is designed to ensure the health and fitness of drivers participating in high-speed motorsport, where physical and mental well-being are crucial for safe competition.

What is a Motor Racing Medical?
The motor racing medical examination is undertaken by a GMC registered Doctor (GP) who are experienced in assessing the specific health requirements of motorsport participants. The examination focuses on evaluating various aspects of the driver’s health and physical condition, taking into account the unique demands and risks associated with motor racing.
A motor racing medical examination, includes the following components:
(Approximately 15-30min)
Registration
- A medical questionnaire will be provided to complete.
- A picture ID such as passport or driving licence will be checked by a member of the team.
- A urine sample will be obtained to look for protein, glucose, and blood.
Medical History
- GP will enquire about the driver’s medical history, including any pre-existing conditions, surgeries, medications, or disabilities.
- Health questionnaire will form part of the appointment.
Physical Examination
- Blood pressure, Weight (BMI), Height, Pulse and oxygen levels will be tested.
- Discussion with a doctor regarding any existing health issues and medication
- Listening to the drivers breathing and heart sounds with a stethoscope.
- External examination/ feel of the abdomen.
- Examination of the nervous system, looking at tone, power, reflexes, sensation, and coordination.
- Examination of the eyes and other nerves in the face
- Sight test- Distance only, with each eye done separately, with or without glasses.
- Balance Assessment and nerve test for the back of the brain.
- General movement of the back and neck.
- Lung capacity and breathing will be checked using a spirometry test.
- Ears will be checked with an otoscope.
Once the examination is complete, the GP will make a decision as to whether the driver has passed or whether they require additional tests before receiving a signed certificate to take away.
These free re-tests may include the following
- Blood pressure reading at another date if the drivers blood pressure is too high.
- Completing the eye test again with a new glasses prescription.
- Checking blood sugar readings collected over a 2-week period at 2 hourly intervals when driving if diabetic.
If the driver has heart problems, then additional tests may be required such as an exercise tolerance test (ETT), or a stress echo (a specialist heart trace), and we can recommend an approved provider to carry this out.
If the driver has had a heart attack, or angina, then an echocardiogram (ECHO) may need to be carried out, which we can carry out at the clinic for £50.
