Channel and Ice Swimming Medicals

When undertaking any cold water events a medical examination must be undertaken by a trained, registered Doctor to ensure the body is able to cope with the challenges ahead.

It is important that the correct preparations for Ice water swimming are completed due to the risks associated with the sport. Cold incapacitation, shock and hypothermia are all very real risks A medical is required to ensure the body is able to cope with these. Hypothermia, is a potentially dangerous condition caused by excessive heat loss from the body.

The medical examination includes an assessment of the swimmer’s ability to recognise the signs and symptoms of hypothermia, as well as their knowledge of appropriate safety measures and strategies to mitigate the risks. An ECG may be needed as part of specific swims, such as the North Channel, or IISA, or if there are any pre existing heart conditions present which AC Medical can provide at the same time as the medical.
