Boxing Medicals

The boxing medical appointment aims to identify any medical conditions or factors that could increase the risk of injuries or adverse health effects during boxing matches

Boxing medicals are a requirement of taking part in a match and are undergone every 2 years. Depending on the boxing organisation’s regulations, blood tests may be required to screen for certain medical conditions, such as infectious diseases or prohibited substances. ECGs may also be required as an addition.

The specific requirements for a boxing medical examination may vary based on the regulations set by the relevant boxing authorities or organisations. It is important for boxers to consult with their boxing association or governing body to understand the exact guidelines and requirements for their boxing medical.

What to expect in a Boxing Medical

A boxing medical examination, includes the following components:

(Approximately 15-30min)

Registration

  • Completion of own referee’s form and medical questionnaire.
  • A picture ID such as passport or driving licence will be checked by a member of the team.
  • A urine sample will be obtained to look for protein, glucose, and blood.

Medical History

  • GP will enquire about the patients’ medical history, including any pre-existing conditions, surgeries, medications, or disabilities.
  • Health questionnaire will form part of the appointment.

Physical Examination

  • Blood pressure, Weight (BMI), Height, Pulse and oxygen levels will be tested.
  • Discussion with a doctor regarding any existing health issues and medication
  • Listening to the patients breathing and heart sounds with a stethoscope.
  • External examination/ feel of the abdomen.
  • Examination of the nervous system, looking at tone, power, reflexes, sensation, and coordination.
  • Examination of the eyes and other nerves in the face
  • Sight test- Distance only, with each eye done separately, with or without glasses.
  • Balance Assessment and nerve test for the back of the brain.

  • Ears will be checked with an otoscope.

If an ECG is required in addition to the boxing medical it will be performed by a trained medical expert, using up to 12 sensors with wires attached which will be stuck to the chest area, and one on the left ankle. A recording will be generated from a machine to show your heart rhythm and electrical activity. This will be displayed by a graph, and your Medical Expert will talk through this with you.

Once the examination is complete, the Doctor will make a decision as to whether the patient has passed or whether they require additional tests before receiving a signed certificate to take away.

These free re-tests may include another blood pressure reading at a later date if it is found to be too high at the appointment, or the doctor may want to review a copy of the patients medical notes from their registered GP.
